Evaluation:
This walk, which takes place in a lonely corner of Sérifos, is nice, but
difficult to the end: the trails are evident in during the first half of the
walk, but the descent to the beach of Avessalós is not
easy! Deserves **.

mind the mistakes...]
Estimated time:
It takes 10 minutes to follow the
concrete road between Agia Thékla and Liómantra, and then about 45 minutes (AWT)
to reach the beach of Avessalós. While the way out requires a little less than
an hour, the return route takes a little over 1h20, because of the difficult
climb .
The actual walking time thus amounts to a total of 2h10, but the total time
(TWT) was, in our case, about 4h30 - we actually walked from 11am to 3.30pm...
Route description:
[Since there is no bus, you should rent a car or bike to get to the starting
point.
The gravel road between Agia Marína and Agia Thékla is passable - it is thus
quite possible to drive to the hill of Agia Thékla or even up to Liómantra ...
If you prefer to walk starting from the asphalt road
near Agia Marína, you should add 35 minutes (AWT) to follow the gravel road up
to Agia Thékla.
There is room to park the car ...
(0h00) Starting from the open ground
at the bottom of Agia Thékla, you continue on the concrete road going down -
there is no marking, though the walk has received the number [7] on the recent
map of Anávasi.
After about 10 minutes, you arrive near the first house and follow the gravel
road until next to the church of Liómantra (date 1711).
In the
distance, you already see the bay of Avessalós.
The chapel of Liómantra.
(0h11) The trail starts to the right
of the church; you keep to the right and you thus arrive between walls.
You pass an alóni (threshing floor) and below, you veer to the left and you pass
in this way between 2-3 small stables, where you find the continuation of your
trail.
You descend slowly, almost straight to the bay of Avessalós – it is a pity that
there is on your left a whole valley that has suffered a lot from a fire (22
September 2013).
The fire also affected the valley that lies on your path.
(0h22) After 11 minutes, you arrive
between abandoned stables, and you see how the wide trail continues between
walls to the hill in front of you, dotted with several ruins.
The path continues on
the ridge, between 7-8 ruins.
Before you pass next to the highest ruin and just in front of a kind of curved
wall, you should keep to the left in order to pass to the left side of those
houses.
Further on, the buildings appear grouped around a real street – you should keep
to the left here and down (cairn), and so you pass just to the left of a ruin
(cairn). You now go down on the rocks, with no obvious path
and between the last
ruins (two cairns)...
Some ruins are really
impressive...
... and sometimes,
they seem to form a real street.
(0h36) You again arrive to the left
of a heavy curved wall and you veer with it to the right - with a beautiful view
of the bay of Avessalós!
Here also, the fire
really devastated a lot... |
|
Charred bushes...
Shortly after, you veer left and go down between rather heavy walls; later, you
continue to follow the right wall (we left a cairn).
You arrive on a rocky spot where you see very well how the trail winds down
between the walls.
(0h40) The rocky descent is really
steep and difficult - there are no steps - but it is obvious.
After 7-8 minutes, you need to pass through a gate in reinforcing steel and just
after a right turn, you start the most difficult passage.
For a short time, it is better to step over the wall to the right, in order to
continue in zigzags to the right of that wall (there is a cairn).
You now descend between two other walls (we left cairns), until you can continue
between the first walls.
The last 5 minutes are also very hard - during the descent between ruined walls,
you sometimes slip instead of walk... You finally get to a path where you veer
90 degrees to the left, towards the beach.
Below the wall of a house, you still meander right and left, you pass through a
gate and so you climb on the rocks down to the gravel beach that is not very
nice. (0h57)
The beach of Avessalós.
(0h57) For the way back, you should
climb the rocks at the end of the beach, you go through the gate in reinforcing
steel and you zigzag left and right until you get underneath the wall of a
house.
You go left, then right and up on a vague rocky trail (we left a cairn), until
you arrive against a wall.
A little further, you should of course go up to the right on the steep trail
between walls - it will be a very difficult climb...
(1h06) When the left wall seems to
stop (cairn on the right wall), you should continue to climb as much as possible
between the two walls that continue up.
The left wall disappears from time to time, but after 2-3 minutes, you arrive
against a wall which you follow for a few moments to the left, until you can go
to the right through a breach (we still
left a cairn).
You go left to a piece of wall, then zigzag to the right, left and right again
(cairns), and you thus get against the wall where the old trail probably passed.
Once more left and right, and you arrive again against the wall: you step over
it (cairn) and you now can continue definitively between the walls - and you
avoided in this way a completely ruined stretch of the path...
(1h13) You veer left and you go
through a gate in reinforcing steel; you veer right on very obvious rocky steps,
and you still begin a steep climb, but this time, the path is clear because
of the walls.
(1h19) The path becomes narrower for
a few moments, then it continues to meander up, until you reach an open spot
(cairn).
You still go up, and while keeping to the left (cairn), you arrive next to the
first stable.
The climb continues for several minutes to the right of a blackened wall and
between charred bushes.
So you arrive to the right of the largest building (cairn) - you can take a
glance inside...
Inside the hearth is
still visible...
(1h30) You continue to the RIGHT of a
round building in front of you, you come next to a rounded wall and you continue
to go up to the left, between a rock and a stable (cairn).
You pass through "the street", then you continue to the right of the last house
on a clear path that continues on the crest of the hill, with a beautiful view
to the left of the bay of Karavás.
(1h34) You keep following the ridge,
but near the penultimate building, you go left, while next to the last building
you go up to the right - and so you pass on the right side of a summit.
Just before arriving at Liómantra, you should keep to the right and you then
climb between or on large blocks of an ancient Mycenaean wall, until you arrive
next to the church.
(1h56) You keep to the left to the
gravel road and after having followed the concrete road for 13 minutes, you
arrive at the open ground underneath Agia Thékla.
(2h11)
