Alamaniá - Piskopió - Rogó - Ormos Korthíou

Evaluation: This beautiful and fairly short hike follows a few unknown trails – the path between Piskopió and Rogó is not even indicated on the Anávasi-map. The hike gets an evaluation of ***. 

Estimated time: It will take you almost 40 minutes to hike from Alamaniá to the church of Piskopió. From there, the steep descent to Ormos Korthíou will cost you another 40 minutes. The total actual walking time is 1h20.

Route description: [In order to leave from Alamaniá you can ask a taxi to take you there from Ormos Korthíou, which is a short and inexpensive trip. Alternatively, you can also come on foot via a rather unpleasant asphalt road: 2.2 km along the main road to Agia Marína and then another 900 metres to the church of Alamaniá.]

(0h00) You leave at the end of the small asphalt road, under the large and square clock tower of Alamaniá, standing separately from the church. Before leaving you should have a look at the marvellous view on the wide valley. You go up the concrete slope and then on the white staircase to the clock tower. You go up on the left of this tower, but halfway the staircase you keep to the right; further on, at the stables, you take a left. In this way you first go up and then you walk almost horizontally, until you reach the junction at the curve of a metal water pipe, where you go right.

(0h05) The path now runs somewhat mysteriously between tall walls and after some 6 minutes you reach a T-junction where you take a right. The trail gets opener and wider, but then it continues between the tall walls, on a worn away rocky bottom. After 11 minutes all together you reach the very simple chapel of Agios Dimítris, where the trail turns to the right sharply. You still have a great view on the valley – towards the right this valley runs up to the village of Zaganiáris and to Stavropéda.

(0h17) You go up for two more minutes and at a triangular crossing you take a left. Your trail continues for a few more minutes underneath the crown of the hill and then you have to keep somewhat to the right – at the point where the walls diverge. In this way you climb to the crest of the hill.

(0h23) Just before the mills you see a broad trail coming from the left. You proceed straight ahead, crossing the windy hill ridge, with the three stumps of the mills on your right-hand side. On the left there is a peculiar building, which appears to be the ruin of the mill with horizontal wings. Over the hill, after some 6 minutes, you keep to the left in the direction of Piskopió, and some 2 minutes later you take a right. You descend towards a small bridge with on its left-hand side a beautiful well; straight in front of you there is the high building of an old water mill – it would be more than 400 years old and you notice a pigeon tower on top of it.

(0h33) Past the bridge you take the staircase on the left, going to the village. After the staircase you continue on a beautiful and narrow concrete lane. You take some more steps and when you arrive on top you go right, until you reach a nice well – there is a death’s-head warning you of undrinkable water! Slightly later you reach the church of the Zoödóchos Pigí. 

(0h38) You walk past the church, you keep to the left for a short while, and then you go right on a horizontal lane between two white lines running through the village. After 1-2 minutes you keep to the right and slightly further, at a staircase on the right, you proceed straight ahead – and still horizontally. About 4 minutes later you take some steps on the right and then the trail continues horizontally; a little later you reach the asphalt road.

(0h43) Straight across, towards the left, you find a small gravel road doing down steeply. Shortly thereafter you keep to the left, towards a chapel – you already have a marvellous view on the bay of Korthí. About three minutes later you reach the chapel and you go down on its left-hand side. Underneath the chapel you get to a really beautiful path doing down steeply for many minutes, sometimes meandering and usually between tall walls. After yet another 4 minutes you descend a steep staircase, straight towards the bay. At the end of the staircase, after two minutes, you arrive at a side-trail, which is more or less blocked to the left – you take a right, alongside a black water pipe. You still descend quickly, usually by following steps. A little further down you keep to the right and you go down many more steps, in the direction of the deep valley with cypresses. You follow a couple of nicely laid out curves and then, after 15-16 minutes all together you reach another side-path, where you go left.

(0h59) A little later you arrive at an oleander and you take a right; you cross the bed of the small valley via a concrete bridge – on the 26th of September 2007 there was still some water in this valley. .
You open a gate made of two planks and you fasten it carefully behind you, since there are some sheep around. You now walk on a concrete path, next to the bed of the river, but then you get into the bed after all. A little later the concrete trail begins again and it continues into the narrow valley. After 5 minutes the trail becomes an earthen path for a short while, with large border stones, and then you reach a beautiful arched bridge. You go left, through a gate made of 3-4 planks and in this way you get to a concrete road close to the bridge.
