Antíparos and Diplá |
||
Evaluation:
After a short visit to the pleasant little town of Antíparos you walk
to the northern beach, next to the camping site. From there you can wade
to the neighbouring island of Káto Fyrá, one of the two little islands
forming the double-island of Diplá – a truly remarkable experience. This
trip gets an evaluation of **.
Estimated time:
The actual walking time from the harbour, through Antíparos, to Diplá only takes about 35 - 40 minutes, but you should of course spend some
more time to visit the kástro and to relax on the beach and in the
water... Route description: (0h00) Leaving from the harbour you follow the main street for about 5 minutes and just past the post office, at the first small square with a tree, you take a left. Slightly further you go right (signpost to Folk Museum) to the actual platía or square, the platía Agíou Nikoláou. The platía Agíou Nikoláou. Under the
large tree you find some really attractive terraces. The signpost to the
kástro and the Folk Museum lead you to an arch, some 30-40 metres
further down, forming the entrance to the kástro. The entrance to the kástro of Antíparos. As is often the
case, also this kástro dates from the Venetian time (13th
-16th century), and more in particular from the mid 15th
century, when Giovanni Loredano married Maria Sommaripa from Antíparos.
The kastro is square, with a side of 53.8 metres long; the houses
contain three floors. In the middle of the kástro there is a circular
tower, on which you can now find the Folk Museum (closed on Mondays). The kástro of Antíparos. (0h10) From the kástro you walk back to the first little square, where you continue straight ahead (so NOT going back to the main street). The paved street first turns into asphalt and after 3 minutes into gravel. You easily get to the rocky coast, which you follow to the right. |
(0h23)
Slightly
thereafter you pass the camping site and you then reach a sandy
extension to the beach - Diplá
looks very nearby, on the opposite side of a narrow strait of about
200-300 metres wide. The sandy beach of Antíparos with on the opposite side the small island of Diplá. The narrow strait between Antíparos and Diplá. (0h30) From the sandy point of Antíparos you cannot directly cross to Diplá – usually, the current is too strong and the water also gets too deep. You should thus first wade a little more to the right, in the direction of the following cape of Antíparos. When you approach this cape you can cross straight to Diplá, orientating yourself towards a small building. Wading towards Diplá ... The water is about
1.2 to 1.4 metres deep, which allows you to make about 500 steps in 7
minutes. On the opposite side there is nothing really going on, there
are only a few goats waiting for you... (0h37) For the return
route through the water you should wade in the direction of the cape for
the first part, but after having covered 3/4 of the way (about 350
steps), you should bend to the right, towards the extension of the beach
(still about 150 steps to go) – in this way, the water will never get
deeper than 1.4 metres. (0h44) You walk along the coast for another 7 minutes and then you take the small gravel road, passing the chapel of Theológos. The road becomes asphalt and after 1 minute of pavement you arrive at the small square, where you take a left, into the main street. Some 5 minutes later you reach the harbour again. (1h08) The little harbour of Antíparos.
