Evaluation:
This walk describes the
shortest path down to the nice beach of Katsoúni.
It then continues along the coast to the beach of Klisídi,
and then to the little port of Agios Nikólaos.
From there, you follow the old path up to Chóra – unfortunately, it has been
cemented.
The short walk gets **.
If you only want to go back and forth to Katsoúni, you can of course retrace
your steps from there and take the same route back to Chóra.
If you want to go by the shortest route to Klisídi, you can descend to Agios
Nikólaos, to take the path along the coast to the beach of Klisídi.
[The translation of
this walk was
made with some help of Google translate - so, do not mind the mistakes...]
Estimated time:
It takes only 35 minutes to
reach the beach of Katsoúni, in actual walking time.
The walk trip via the beach
of Klisídi to the port takes 20 minutes and the climb up to Chóra requires a
little less than half an hour.
The
total actual walking time (AWT) thus amounts to an hour and a half.
Route description:
(0h00)
As always, you can depart from the central street of Chóra, the Plágia, next to
the restaurant Liotrívi (there is a sign “Plágia”); you go down on the paved
street to the parking lot and the bus stop. You then follow the asphalt road to
the right, in the direction of the harbour. After 6-7 minutes you go straight
ahead - the road on the left runs to the helicopter field; 2 minutes further,
you come to a crossroad and you continue all the way to the left (signpost
Roúkounas - Monastíri). A little further there is a stone staircase on the
right, the beginning of a beautifully signposted path (sign Roúkounas 50 minutes
/ Kastélli 1h30 / Monastíri 2h20, and a little further the trail marker [1]).
The hiking sign at the beginning
of walk [1].
(0h10)
You see the path that clearly continues before you and you descend on a
path that is sometimes paved, but most of the time it is covered with
gravel. After 4-5 minutes you arrive between many cactuses and you veer
to the right.
The path passes between a lot of
cactuses...
You walk
now above a beautiful valley, likewise full of cacti, and after a while you
arrive in a second and a bit further in a third little side-valley, each time
filled with olive trees – you veer again to the right.
After the third valley you first walk on a flat path, but after a while, the
main path begins to climb to the left on the rocky slope – you should keep to
the RIGHT however, on a vague path that descends. In
spring, this trail is not visible due to the vegetation: the grassy path turns
right on a sort of terrace.
You now continue above a narrow deep valley, while slowly descending, and after
6 minutes you get to a gravel road.
(0h28) Your trail continues on the
opposite side, but it is for some moments hardly passable, while continuing to
the right to a house.
Further, the trail becomes better: you
go down a concrete staircase and arrive
in front of a concrete wall.
The vague trail continues to the left of the wall, it passes through a wooden
gate and comes on a grassy field with a caravan on the right (!): to the left,
you see a small road that ends here, but straight across,
on the
other side of the field, there is a clear monopáti that continues.
You slowly descend and you already see on the other side of the valley, the path
which will lead you to Klisídi.
After a little less than 3 minutes, there is a bifurcation and you take a right:
the trail becomes vague because of the vegetation (in spring), but soon you
arrive on the beach.

The beach of Katsoúni.
|
|
The beach is nice and sandy and you see in front of you four little islets –
with Makra, on the left, and Pachia, the largest, on the right; to the far left,
you see also the impressive monolith of Kálamos.
(0h37) To the left of the valley that
ends on the beach (with your back to the sea), thus to the left of the
vegetation with a ruin, starts the other path, which rises immediately to the
left of the valley.
You veer left after a few minutes and you see already in front of you the houses
of Agios Nikólaos.
You arrive next to a metal fence and you pass just next to a few houses.
Immediately after, you take the concrete path on the left, which descends
through the terrace of café Klisídi; a little farther, the trail forks: to the
left, you can go down to the beach, whereas to the right, the path continues to
Agios Nikólaos.
(0h47) This trail gets to the small
road that you left a few moments ago, and you take of course a left.
The slope becomes steeper, but halfway, you can take a left again onto the small
concrete road leading down to the harbor (sign "port").
This road eventually becomes a rocky trail that rises again and offers you a
beautiful view of the harbor.
You turn right and descend in this way until the asphalt road leading to Chóra.
You go left, but 15 meters before reaching the edge of the water, and just after
the power plant, you will find the concrete stairs, which is the beginning of
the way back to Chóra.
[But first, you should of course have a look at the quiet harbor of Agios
Nikólaos - you can have a drink in the cafe Popys.
After that, you should retrace your steps up the trail in front of the
plant-station.]
(0h58) The concrete path – once a kalderími?
– climbs fast: first there are 40 broad steps, and then you describe a wide
right turn.
After 12 minutes, the small road turns sharply left and you get higher and
higher in long turns.
The begining of the cemented
path back to Chóra.
Looking behind you, towards the
path and the little port.
View on Chóra
and the kástro.
Once arrived almost at the top, you keep to the right, but a little further, you
take the concrete path that goes up to the left.
The trail eventually becomes a paved street leading to the main street, the
Plágia, right in front of the school.
On the left, the street leads to the kástro and the square in front of the
church, on the right, you can follow the Plágia to the restaurant Liotrívi, your
starting point.
