Chóra Anáfis

Evaluation: These short hikes in and around Chóra, the main town of Anáfi, give you an idea of this nice little village and its surroundings. They get an evaluation of **.

Estimated time: The hike through Chóra only takes 15 minutes. Descending to the small harbour of Agios Nikólaos will cost you about 30 minutes one way. And the short trip towards Psáthi only takes a few minutes as well.

Route description

A. In fact, the village of Chóra only consists of one single street, and it is built on the site of a Venetian kástro. This street leads upwards on the ridge of the hill, from down in the quarter of Ta Plágia over the small square at the restaurant of Liotrívi (over here you can take a right to the bus square). It then continues past the foúrno (bakery) and past a couple of restaurants and shops. After some 3 minutes you can take the staircase on the right, at Alexandra’s Place. In about 3-4 minutes you will thus get to the chapel. Over here you have a nice view on Chóra, but also on the harbour and on the island of Santoríni.

Panoramic view on Chóra (from next to the chapel).

After Alexandra's Place (or restaurant Anáfi) you can proceed straight ahead, up some steps, until you arrive at the platía with the war monument. From the look-out on the right of the old mill, you can clearly see the sea and the island of Santoríni.

When returning, you can descend even further, past the square with the restaurant of Liotrívi, until you reach a tourist shop (at this shop you can find a very simple map of Anáfi and also some post cards) and the post office.

B. Near the school you can also take a left and go down a small concrete street. In this way you pass the nicely situated bar of Armenáki and after a few minutes you reach the concrete road. You take a right for a short while and a little further you can see the sign "Limáni/Port" on the left. From this point you also have a nice view on the height of the kástro.

Chóra and the hill of the kástro.

You can take a left and zigzag down on a concrete path, to the harbour of Agios Nikólaos. After 5 minutes already you get a view on this small harbour and all together the entire descent only takes about 20 minutes.

Panoramic view on Chóra.

The road and the path that both descend to the little harbour.

C. When you depart from the restaurant of Liotrívi and you go down to the bus square, you will see a small, eastern-looking church further on and also a couple of aerials. On the right you find a concrete road, which you follow on the right-hand side of two mills. The small road turns into gravel (with some sloppy Greek henhouses next to it) and then it soon becomes a beautiful trail. This trail goes up – sometimes it is rocky and sometimes it consists of gravel, for a short while it is also covered with the old pavement. Especially in the mornings you have a great view on Chóra from here.

If you continue over here, you pass a few chapels and you will finally reach a gravel road, close to the hamlet of Psáthi – see the short hike no. 22 in "Santorini, Sifnos and western and southern Cyclades" by Dieter Graf.

[If you would like to walk to the nearest beach of Katsoúni, you should go down the asphalt road to the harbour. At the turn to Roúkounas you notice another road going straight ahead and also a road going to the right. You take the road straight ahead and almost immediately you find a path off the left (with a rusty sign post to Kastélli) – in this way you easily get to the beach. ]

[If you would like to find the concrete trail to Chóra, when leaving from the harbour of Agios Nikólaos, you have to take the asphalt road to Chóra – the trail begins immediately on the left.
Slightly further on the asphalt road, there is a path off the right leading to the beach of Klisídi.]
