Chorió - Agii Anárgyri - Paleókastro - Agióklima and back

Evaluation: This hike is one of the most beautiful you can make on the island of Kímolos. By following really nice trails it brings you to the north-western interior, first by the same path which also leads to the rock of Skiádi, then further to the tallest hill of the island, the Paleókastro (364 m), and finally until above the bay of Agióklima. It is difficult to go down to the beach itself, but the trails and the curious phenomena of erosion make this hike worth a maximum of ****.
[The translation of this walk was made with some help of Google translate - so, do not mind the mistakes...]

Estimated time: It takes 35 minutes to walk up to Agii Anargyri, then the stretch with the gravel road and a beautiful trail up to the bifurcation with the paths to the Skiádi and the Paleókastro, still lasts half an hour. Finally, the walk to the north and to the bay of Agióklima takes an hour – the total actual walking time (AWT) of the way out thus amounts to 2h05.
The way back lasts as long, so that the total AWT amounts to about 4h15.
We picnicked near our turn, with a beautiful view of the coast, and we walked from 10.30am until 6.30pm - so a total time of about 8 hours, as usual double of the AWT .. .

Route description: (0h00) You depart from the heart of Chorió, from the beautiful little square with the long name: Platía Ikonómou Spyrídonos Ramfoú, the "Kámbos", the Field, in popular speech. You stand next to the kafenío "O Kambos" and you take, with your back to the little church with the blue vaults, the Agios Spyrídoon, the main street, on the left of the white chapel – this street runs towards the north.

The platía or Kámbos, the central square of Chorió.

In this way you pass the iatrío (the clinic) and some shops. On the square with a well you keep to the right, and you continue in the main street. You pass the bakery, a greengrocery, and another butcher, next to the church with a blue dome of Papadí and Theoskepastí . You then arrive at the post office and the OTE-aerial, with straight across the small pantopolío of Kikí Marináki.

The grocery shop or pantopolío of Kikí Marináki.

You continue straight ahead, you keep to the left and after some 7 minutes you arrive at a heavy electricity pole with a hiking sign on the left, pointing to Paleókastro and the Skiádi.

The hiking sign to Paleókastro and the Skiádi.

(0h07) You take a left and already after one minute you see the beginning of a paved monopáti, which soon turns into concrete. You go down on the left, into a bed of a river; you then take a right, into the small valley, on a concrete road between walls. After one minute, near a tree, the road leaves the valley on the left (there is a white arrow) - if you followed this indication, you should follow the road that destroyed the old monopáti to Agii Anárgyri.
However, you go RIGHT for a short while, to a concrete bridge; you walk on the left-hand side of this bridge and then you take the trail on the left of the concrete retaining wall of a house (blue dot). This trail continues between walls, into a little valley: it is very stony and runs in a kind of shallow bed. Another 5 minutes later, at the corner of a vineyard, you keep to the left. The path becomes rocky and after a short while also stony; the bed becomes narrower and it runs between walls.
Where the river bed divides, you can follow the right bed or take the small path that leaves the bed going straight, which is easier. This trail continues on a field, but joins the bed a little further.

(0h24) You go up gradually between red-brown walls and keep to the left a little later; for a moment you can already notice Agii Anárgyri in front of you.

The monopáti to Agii Anárgyri.

You go up steeply now, but before you reach the highest point, after about 6 minutes, you should have a look behind you: you can see the village of Chorió with on the left the hill ridge of Xaplovoúni with the mills, and the island of Polýaigos behind it; in front of you there is Agii Anárgyri, with on its right-hand side the monastery of Profítis Ilías.

Looking behind you, in the direction of Chorió.

For a short while you descend into a little valley; you keep going in the same direction all the time. Then you go up until you reach the gravel road coming from Chorió. Straight across there is a water tank for animals and drinking troughs with the date of 1934. You take a right and a little further you pass the restored little church of Agii Anárgyri – it is closed....

The "restored" chapel of Agii Anárgyri.

(0h36) You continue straight ahead on the white road that remains rather wide and made out of gravel. You pass a first side-trail off the left (this trail crosses the entire valley and it then continues to some peculiar rock formations – see the hike to the Sklávos), and then you pass a kind of shelter and another side-trail off the right. A couple of minutes later there is another side-trail off the right – it runs between walls to the chapel of Agios Vasílios (piquet Geowalk 5). You keep going straight ahead on the main road, though (there is a blue arrow pointing straight ahead), but after another 2-3 minutes you notice another gravel road tp  the left – this road replaces a nice path that would bring you to the Profítis Ilías, see the hike to the Profítis Ilías. Also this time you continue straight ahead (sign Kapéllo / Kástro); after another 5 minutes you pass a nice path off the left, but also this time you keep going on the main road (blue dot) – a little further this main road runs between two boulders (white letters “Kapéllo 100 m left).

The main road to Paleókastro and the Skiádi.

(0h54) Some 2 minutes later you find a little road off the left (white arrow and inscription "Paleókastro / Skiádi + Geowalk 5): over here you have to leave the main road – still in 2010, a beautiful path started here, but again the bulldozers did their job and the monopáti was destroyed by the construction of the gravel road, why??
Only 4 minutes later, the old path finally begins and for the following 9 minutes you walk on a great and almost flat trail, which is paved on a couple of places, but usually it is flat and made out of gravel. In the beginning you have a magnificent view on the strait between Kímolos and Mílos, with Pollónia on the left and more to the right the white strip of the beach of Sarakinikó. On your left you notice a really beautiful valley and then you walk underneath the summit of the Sklávos, with high up on the right the radar reflector. After exactly 10 minutes you get to a junction: a blue arrow points to the right and to the left; in 2010, there was also a hiking sign, but it has disappeared... –
the trail on the right continues to the Paleókastro.

[For the walk to the Skiádi, see the hike Chorió - Skiádi - Mavrospília - Agios Pandeleímonas - Chorió.]

(1h04) You thus take a right: the trail ascends gradually and your progress is easy - the pavement is sometimes very beautiful.

The nice path continues towards the Paleókastro.

T
his has to be a very old trail, because sometimes you can even see some little gutters in the middle. After 7 minutes, you keep to the left on a stony slope, and 2-3 minutes later, you pass 2 small white buildings, located on a pass. You climb again until you arrive, after a total of 17 minutes, next to a little stable and in front of a sinking before the next summit, with a deep valley on your right. The panoramic view is really fabulous: Mílos on the left, with the very clear site of Sarakíniko, Antímilos to the right, and the Paleókastro in front of you, with on its left the vague island of Sérifos and on its right  the island of Sífnos and the small island of Kitrianí (on the right of Sífnos).

View on the chain of the Paleókastro.

(1h18) You now descend on eroded rocks, then you come next to a wall and later between two walls. Later on, the descent on the eroded terrain is beautiful, and your trail winds from time to time in a sort of eroded gullies.

Nice paths, sometimes on eroded terrain...

(1h26) At the lowest point of the depression, you pass between two small ruins. You go up again, you go through a narrow passage between a little hill and a sharp rock and 3-4 minutes later, you see on the right side of your rocky path an old natural cistern with 2 drinking-troughs carved into the rock. You climb a little to the right, and then you start the descent with the impressive summit of the Paleókastro in front of you.

The summit of the Paleókastro.

Notice also details like the eroded rocks up to the right and the more or less square alóni to the left of the trail.

(1h35) You start the real descent now, with a beautiful valley and small white peninsula islands in front of you. The obvious trail winds first to the left, and then to the right – down on the left side, you notice a small skiádi ... You thus arrive after 5 minutes next to a very eroded rock-face, that falls like a brownish curtain; in front of you, the triangular hill also shows typical erosion phenomena.

Beautiful phenomena of erosion...

You continue to descend: the path becomes for a few moments a vague trace on a rocky slope, but you see very well the continuation of the trail and soon, it becomes more evident again. You pass next to a primitive alóni and you always descend in zigzags; you go up for a few moments and you get to the right of two stables and in front of a valley - it is here that the final descent starts to the nice little bay that lays to the left of the two small peninsula islands.

The little bay of Agióklima.

(1h51) The descent is steady now, first in wide turns and sometimes on small eroded steps.

An old path with eroded steps!

Pay attention: after a little less than 4 minutes, you have to descend in zigzags to the right, into a small green valley, while the trail passes on the right of an eroded rock-face. It is under this inclined rock that you must follow a faint trail to the right: you cross the small valley between the bushes, and then you veer left on the opposite slope to follow a clear path. You now continue at the RIGHT side of the bed of a small river, again towards the sea. After a few minutes, there is a junction where you go right. The trail is initially pretty obvious, but later it is overgrown by frýgana; after a few minutes, you come next to some drinking-troughs and a well.

(2h03) The red marks and an arrow send you up to the right - do NOT do this, but continue straight, crossing a barrier of fagots. The trail is obvious, but you find no easy way to go down to the beach of Agióklima - it seems inaccessible and we decided to stop here.

(2h06) You thus retrace your steps: after 3 minutes, you pass the obstacle, then you continue into the small valley where you veer to the far right in order to climb up until you get next to the inclined rock. You continue to the left on a trail that is clear now - first it is worn away and then it continues by describing wide turns or by following many old eroded steps. You pass to the left of the 2 stables, you go down and up again, and then you follow many turns, while you pass next to the primitive alóni. Your trail becomes vague, on a rocky slope, and you thus arrive in front of the impressive large rock with a rock-face that is eroded in the shape of a curtain.

(2h33) You begin a steep climb of about 11 minutes: after 7 minutes, you pass the square alóni, then you need another 4 minutes to reach the next ridge. Here you take a little rest, to enjoy the wonderful view: on the left, you see the two summits of the Sklávos (with the antenna) and the Paleókastro and on the right there is the sea strait with behind it Mílos and Antímilos.

(2h44) You go down a few minutes and you pass next to the cistern; you go up again, sometimes on white and eroded trails - and you arrive at the top, at the foot of the Chóni.

The nice worn out path describes many zigzags...

(2h59) You now descend all the time: after 7 minutes, you pass on the  left side of the two little white buildings on a sort of pass, between a hill on your right and the Sklávos on your left - near the first building, you keep of course to the left and now you follow a beautiful trail with a very uneven pavement, which gets after again 8 minutes to the trail that comes from the Skiádi.

(3h14)
Over here you can still take some rest – the silence is ‘deafening’! You take a left of course and the following part is really great, with on your right the beautiful view on the deep valley and on the island of Mílos. After 9 minutes, the trail becomes a narrow path and again 4 minutes later, you get to the main road, where you take a right in order to continue to Chorió.

(3h27) You walk between the large boulders and already after 4-5 minutes Chorió appears in front of you. You pass a number of side-paths on the left and the right and after 15 minutes you pass Agii Anárgyri.

(3h45) You continue on the gravel road for one more minute, but close to the water tank you go all the way to the left, where you find the path going down.

[You can of course also stay on the main road, but this will take exactly the same amount of time.]

When taking the path on the left, you have to keep to the right after about 2 minutes, and further on you turn even more to the right – in this way you get a nice view on Chorió.

The path descends straight to Chorió.

The stony trail descends gradually and another 5 minutes later you keep to the right. Shortly thereafter you reach a narrow valley, but the trail remains really good and a little later it also becomes wider.
After 9 more minutes you arrive at a little concrete bridge, but you walk on its right-hand side and you stay on the small concrete road running in the bed. At the second bridge, shortly later, you go up on the left, leaving the valley. You thus get back to the main street. You walk past the aerial and the post office, where you keep a little to the left. Via the small square you reach the Kámbos again, the large platía. (4h15)
