Chorió - Agii Anárgyri - Sklávos - Agios Vasílios - Profítis Ilías - Chorió |
||
Evaluation:
This hike is not too long and it explores the area between the Profítis
Ilías and the Sklávos, which is, with its 358 m the second highest
mountain on the island. Because of the great trails, this is an ideal
way to get to know the wonderful north-western interior of the island,
and this in a fairly short time span. The hike gets an evaluation
of ***.
Estimated
time: You
first have to hike for half an hour to Agii Anárgyri, and a
little further you take the path that will bring you to the slope of the
Sklávos in about 20 minutes (AWT). You return, you make a small detour
to Agios Vasílios and you then proceed to the monastery of Profítis Ilías,
all together this will take 30 minutes. From the summit it will cost you
another 45 minutes to walk back to the platía in Chorió. Route
description:
(0h00) You depart from the heart of Chorió, from the beautiful
little square with the long name: Platía Ikonómou Spyrídonos Ramfoú,
the "Kámbos", the Field, in popular speech. You stand next to
the kafenío "O Kambos" and you take, with your back to the
little church with the blue vaults, the Agios Spyrídoon, the main
street, on the left of the white chapel – this street runs towards the
north.
The platía or Kámbos, the central square of Chorió. In this way you pass the iatrío (the clinic) and some shops. On the square with a well you keep to the right, and you continue on high street. You pass the bakery, a greengrocery, and another butcher, next to the church with a blue dome of Papadí and Theoskepastí . You then arrive at the post office and the OTE-aerial, with straight across the small pantopolío of Kikí Marináki. The grocery shop or pantopolío of Kikí Marináki. You continue straight ahead, you keep to the left and after some 7 minutes you arrive at a heavy electricity post with a hiking sign on the left, pointing to Paleókastro and the Skiádi. The hiking sign to Paleókastro and the Skiádi. (0h07) You
take a left and already after one minute you see the beginning of a
paved monopáti,
which soon turns into concrete. You go down on the left, into a bed of a
river; you then take a right, into the small valley, on a concrete road
between walls. After one minute, near a tree, the road leaves the valley
on the left (there is also a blue arrow). However, you go RIGHT for a
short while, to a concrete bridge; you walk on the left-hand side of
this bridge and then you take the trail on the left of the concrete
retaining wall of a house. This trail continues between walls, into the
valley. The concrete becomes a regular trail, running nicely in a kind
of shallow bed. Another 5 minutes later, at the corner of a vineyard,
you keep to the left. The path becomes rocky and after a short while
also stony; the bed becomes narrower and it runs between walls. Some
three minutes later you take a right and you go up slightly. (0h18) You
go up gradually between red-brown walls; for a moment you can already
notice Agii Anárgyri
in front of you. The monopáti to Agii Anárgyri. After 2
minutes you keep to the left and you go up steeply now. Before you reach
the highest point, after about 6 minutes, you should have a look behind
you: you can see the town of Chorió with on the left the hill ridge of
Xaplovoúni with the mills and the island of Poliégos behind it; in
front of you there is Agii Anárgyri, with on its right-hand side the
monastery of Profítis Ilías. Looking behind you, in the direction of Chorió. 0h26) For a
short while you descend into a little valley; you keep going in the same
direction all the time. Then you go up until you reach the gravel road
coming from Chorió.
Straight across there is a water tank for animals and drinking troughs
with the date of 1934. (0h30) You
take a right and a little further you pass the over-restored little
church of Agii
Anárgyri – for those of you who are looking for ancient candlesticks
or tables, there is a pile of old furniture to be found outside....
The "restored" chapel of Agii Anárgyri. You continue
straight ahead, but after 1-2 minutes already you take the first path
off the left. It descends into a nice valley with the Profítis Ilías
and its monastery on your right-hand side. |
The path that leads to the pass on the slopes of the Sklávos. (0h51) Unfortunately,
the trail runs to a dead end when you arrive above – the view on the
straight with Mílos
and the small harbour of Pollónia is beautiful, though. Behind you, you
notice the Profítis Ilías, which is not a lot higher than the point
where you are standing now. The Profítis Ilías. (0h51) You
return the way you came, which is in fact a rather easy trip:
along the road you pass a side-trail off the left to the Profítis Ilías,
but it is too much overgrown. You keep going down and already after 9
minutes you reach the sharp turn; 5 minutes later you are down in the
valley and after 4 more minutes you get back to the gravel road. (1h09) You take a left, you pass a small side-trail off the right and after 5-6 minutes you reach another nice trail between walls – also on the right; following this trail it will take you only a few minutes to go up and down to Agios Vasílios. Agios Vasílios. You return to the
main road and after 2 more minutes, just past a curve, you take a
little
road
on the left. Some 5 minutes later you already reach the top
and you get to the fairly large building of the monastery of Profítis
Ilías. Everything is closed, but the panoramic view on Chorió with the
uninhabited Polýaigos beyond is simply magnificent! More to the right
you can distinguish the sharp top of the Sklávos, with the depression
on its right-hand side, where we were just an hour ago. On the other
side, towards the north, you can clearly see the island of Sífnos
behind a lower hill. Rather vaguely you can also see the islands of Páros
and Antíparos, on the right of Sífnos, and Folégandros, on the left
of Polýaigos. The monastery of Profítis Ilías. Panoramic view from the hill of Profítis Ilías, to Chorió and Poliégos. A picnic on the wall of the terrace of Profítis Ilías... (1h22) You descend again and after about 5-6 minutes you arrive at the gravel road again – while going down you could see the chapel of Agios Vasílios in front of you and the island of Sífnos far away. You take a right and some 7 minutes later you pass Agii Anárgyri. (1h35) You
continue on the gravel road for one more minute,
but close to the water tank you go all the way to the left, where you
find the path going down. When taking the path on the left, you have to keep to the right after about 2 minutes, and further on you turn even more to the right – in this way you get a nice view on Chorió.
The path descends straight to Chorió. The stony trail
descends gradually and another 5 minutes later you keep to the right.
Shortly thereafter you reach a narrow valley, but the trail remains
really good and a little later it also becomes wider. (1h52) After 9 more minutes you arrive at a little concrete bridge, but you walk on its right-hand side and you stay on the small concrete road running in the bed. At the second bridge, shortly later, you go up on the left, leaving the valley. You thus get back to the main street. You walk past the aerial and the post office, where you keep a little to the left. Via the small square you reach the Kámbos again, the large platía. (2h01)
