Episkopí - Apókrousi - Kolónna and back

Evaluation: From above the marvellous beach of Episkopí you can walk to the great beach of Apókrousi by following a beautiful trail. Via a gravel road you then walk to the sand ridge of Kolónna, from where you can see a wonderful beach and a beautiful bay on both sides – a favourite anchorage place for sailors. This hike to the three most beautiful beaches of Kýthnos definitely gets an evaluation of **.
Possibly, you can combine this hike with the short walk to the Vryókastro, from where you have a magnificent panoramic view on the surrounding bays and on the ridge of Kolónna...

Estimated time: The hike to Kolónna takes a little less than one hour and you should count on the same amount of time for the return route. But, it is so wonderful to swim on the two beaches that the total walking time will definitely be longer.

Route description:  [If you want to, you can come all the way from Mérichas on foot, but then you have to walk a fairly long stretch along the asphalt road to Episkopí – see the very similar hike Mérichas - Kolónna.]

The large bay of Episkopí.

(0h00) You depart from the asphalt road above the bay of Episkopí – at the beginning of the gravel road you can park your rented car, or you can ask the taxi or bus driver to stop over there: "Boríte na stamatísete kondá sto monopáti stin Kolónna? Could you please stop at the trail to Kolónna?"
At the point where a gravel road on the right of the bay diverges from the asphalt road, you also notice two paths: the left path runs up to the Vryókastro (there is a sign), the right path descends steeply to the bay of Apókrousi. You take this right trail – far away you can already distinguish the bay of Apókrousi.

The monopáti that descends to Apókrousi.

After some 8-9 minutes you have to step over a low wooden "gate" in a wall, but then the narrow earth trail just continues. Next to a house the trail becomes a little gravel road and in this way you easily reach the marvellous sandy beach of Apókrousi after 18 minutes – a great number of tamarisks provide shade.

The marvellous sandy beach of Apókrousi.

(0h18) Far away, on the left and across the water, you already see the sand ridge of Kolónna, but first you have to walk on the beach for another 6 minutes. At the far end of the beach you take the gravel road on the left, which is the sandy beginning of a gravel road – you follow this road going up in 3-4 steep slopes. Make sure to stay on the concrete at the second slope.

(0h36) You get to the top after 12 minutes - Kolónna still seems far away. You then go down by describing some wide curves and after yet another 12 minutes you reach the first beach of the bay. You have to proceed a little further of course and some 4 minutes later you go through a wide open gate, which can close off the entire site of Kolónna – the barrier is meant for the goats, which you will see later on. A couple of minutes later you arrive at the remarkable double beach – some 31 minutes all together after the beach of Apókrousi. (0h55)

Kolónna.

By walking over the sand ridge you can get to the peninsula of Agios Loukás. From above in the tavern you have a truly great view over the entire double beach – this is a very nice place to have lunch or dinner!

(0h55) The return route is self-evident, obviously:
* some 12 minutes on a flat gravel road, then going up gradually for 10 minutes and descending fairly rapidly for 12 minutes
* 6 minutes along the beach, where you might admire a magnificent sunset

Sunset from the road above the beach of Apókrousi.

* at the end of the beach you look for the little gravel road, which becomes a narrow earth trail after 2-3 minutes. It goes up slowly, until you step over the wooden gate after some 9 minutes
* the path becomes wider and a little further you better take the left branch; finally you have to climb up steeply for another 5 minutes – some 18 minutes all together after you left the beach you get above. The way back has cost you 58 minutes. (1h53)
