Paleópolis - Agia Eleoúsa - beach of Paleópolis and back
Evaluation:
This short walk first goes down to the chapel
of Agia Eleoúsa, then up and down until the pebble beach, where the
submerged mole reflects the glorious past of Paleópolis.
Deserves **.
[The
translation of this walk was made with some help of Google translate -

Estimated time:
You
first need
15
minutes to get near Agia Eleoúsa, then you go up again a
little in order to descend the long descent to the beach, an additional
20 minutes.
The return route takes 20 minutes,
always in actual walking time

Route description:
(0h00)You start this little
walk on the asphalt road in Ano Paleópolis, near the beginning of trail
[9] to Ano Aprovátou or Strapouriés. You follow the road for a little
less than two minutes, towards the right (facing the sea), you pass next
to the archaeological museum and the café Periptéro and go down to the
left on the staircase, paint in white (hiking sign « Archéa Pólis / Akti
Paleópolis" + road sign to the "Ierós Náos Agias Marínas" + [9]). After
about 160 steps, you arrive next to the church of Agia Marína. You
descend 120 more steps, between the houses of Káto Paleópolis, and get
so to a concrete little side street – you continue to the right (sign “Paralía”).
(0h05) You pass a source (date 1909), then you cross a bridge – you go
up a little, then you descend again.
You get to a
crossroads where a staircase comes from above and
from the right to continue down
to the left - the trail continues STRAIGHT ("Paralía").
A minute later, the staircase begins - the beginning of a long descent.
After 49 steps, there is a bifurcation: the descent to the beach
continues straight ahead, but you take first a left – later on, you will
be back here.
After another 171 concrete steps, you arrive in front of a small blue
gate, then you descend 103 more steps to reach the small church of Agia
Eleoúsa.
(0h16)
You climb the 270
steps, and then you begin the long descent to the left ("Paralía -
Beach").
Again after 183 steps, there is a flat section - you are now about at
the height of Agia Eleoúsa...
What follows now is a long descent of 315 steps, then you continue above
the sea. You arrive just at the top of the submerged mole, and from here
you can very well see the shape of the mole that continues under water.
You descend 119 steps that make you arrive just above the beginning of
the pier - and you finally descend 21 steps down to the pebble beach.

The oldest discovers in the ancient city of Paleópolis date from the
Mycenaean period (1400-1200 BC ). The city reached its peak in the 6th
century BC, and the submerged remains of the old port attest to this.
The decline began in the beginning of our era, but the city remained
inhabited until the 6th century.
It is a quite extraordinary feeling to find yourself so close to the
remains of the old port...
(0h33) The return goes
smoothly - and if you started rather late in the afternoon, you will
enjoy a fantastic sunset!
(0h47) After a little less
than 700 steps, you find yourselves at the point where the staircase
that comes from Agia Eloúsa from the right. You arrive quickly between
the houses, and you continue of course straight at the crossroad.
You pass the small bridge and the source, and further you keep to the
left.
You follow the concrete alley and you thus arrive at the road that ends
here.
(0h54) A steep climb on the
paved road eventually leads you to the centre of Ano Paleópolis.
