Evaluation:
This walk is one of four walks that pass the beautiful beach of Fykiáda.
This walk guides you there and back. Both the paths and the landscape
are extremely worth seeing. A
few years ago, it was sometimes difficult to find your way around Mousiá,
but there is now a new route. Since 2012, the hike is well signposted
and it deserves the maximum of ****.
[Update by Raymond on September 30, 2013 and on September 20, 2018.]

Estimated time: It takes 1h25 to walk from Platýs Gialós to
Fykiáda (actual walking time),
the distance of this way out is 4,23 km; the return trip takes about the same
time, so the total actual walking time (AWT) is about 2h50.
Our total time (TTW) was about 5 hours. Please also remember to add the
bus time from Platýs Gialós , and don’t forget to consult the bus
timetables. In October 2013, the last bus back was at 17.30.
Route description: [The bus ride from Kamáres to Platýs Gialós,
with a change in Apollonía or Artemónas, lasts an hour.]
(0h00) From the square where the bus terminates you walk back a
little while and then go left inland on a little concrete road (hiking
pole [3] and [4] Mousiá and Fykiáda 1h50 / 4,5 km), following the
signpost to the campsite and Villa Tsioni. After 5 minutes you veer to
the left (= and again a sign to the campsite) and then immediately to
the left, there is a narrow lane (hiking pole [4] Fykiáda 1h45 / 4,1 km
and to the right Profítis Ilías 45’ / 1,7 km – Fykiáda 2h25 / 6,5 km)
- the wider concrete road
straight ahead thus leads to the beginning of the path to Profítis Ilías
and Vathý - see the walk Platýs Gialós - Profítis Ilías - Fykiáda.
So you are going LEFT on the little asphalt road to the right of the
chapel – this road will carries on up the hill for about 8-9 minutes.
(0h14) The road comes to a dead-end at a large gate at the sewage
plant, but there is a smaller gate on the right – there is a hiking pole
“Fykiáda 1h20 / 3,6 km”. A little bit to the left, you’ll see a clear
path between the greenery and soon it becomes even clearer and broader.
You climb up the first hill and behind it you see another, very
green-covered hill. You get a nice view behind you of Platýs Gialós.
After 3 minutes the path becomes rocky, but further on it becomes easier
and a deeper reddish brown. It climbs steadily between a lot of greenery
and grey rocks and eventually you reach the pass, to the right of a
rounded crest of a hill (big cairn).
The clear path to Fykiáda...
(0h32)
Before you lies the green countryside, and Platýs Gialós disappears.
You veer right and the trail descends slowly at first. It becomes
beautiful and wide, but after 4 minutes it is again much more rocky and
steep.
Soon you have a very nice view of the coast and the island of Kitrianí.
Your descent with Kitrianí
in front of you.
(0h42)
After a few difficult minutes , the trail continues flatter, farther the
path describes a sharp turn to the left, then right, and the descent
becomes steeper again. The next part is
much easier, sometimes between high green bushes - you really feel like
being in a boscage. The path now runs nicely parallel to the coast, you
still descend very slowly, and after 16 minutes you reach the water’s
edge (==).
(0h58) You walk rather long time on grey rocks,
dotted with holes, while pursuing on a reddish trail just on the edge of
the vegetation [4].
(1h05) After another 6-7
minutes, you begin to go up; a little later, you should pass through a
breach in a wall and an open metal gate. Shortly after, you veer a
little more
inland, you pass through old olive trees and between high greenery.
After another 5-6 minutes you go through a gap in a low wall (=) and you
veer more to the right on the path that is rather vague now.
(1h12)
Pay attention now: 1 minute further on, you have to descend to the LEFT
through a small valley. You go up a little and veer to the left – and
you get in this way to the angle a wall, behind which stands a white
building. This is Mousiá. You continue to follow the wall now until you
can go to the LEFT
through a gap in the wall (=). You continue to the left of the wall, you
pass to the left side of a ruin and pass again through a breach in a
wall. You are in a sort of large courtyard which you cross, then you
continue to the right side of a few big white buildings and
through a 3rd gap (= and hiking pole Fykiáda 10’).
(1h17) You keep a little to
the right on the vague trail and you continue amid nice olive trees -
and beyond a wall , the path becomes clearer. The following stretch is
idyllic and you always wander among the olive trees and
through some low walls.
A very nice stretch
through fields with olive trees!
The red and brown path continues straight, you still cross low walls and
in this way you arrive automatically to the beautiful bay of Fykiáda
with his lonely beach and the small church of Agios Geórgios to the
right. (1h27)

The bay and the beach of Fykiáda.
A few years ago, the beach was very dirty, but since 2008 it has been
cleaned and in October 2010 and September 2018 it was pretty clean - a
wonderful place to swim and picnic!
[To go
further to the Profítis Ilías Kontoú or Vathý, you should walk through
the breach in the wall to the right of the beach (hiking pole Profítis
Ilías Kontoú 1h45 / 4,8 km - Platýs Gialós 2h30 / 6,9 km), and then you
follow the path to the left - see the walk Platýs Gialós - Fykiáda -
Profítis Ilías Kontoú - Platýs Gialós.]
(1h27)
For the way back, you
stay to the RIGHT of the wall and, starting from the beach, you
walk inland: you thus cross the terraces with olive trees , while going
up slightly
and passing through the walls, straight to the still
invisible buildings of Mousiá .
The path is clear and continues through the low walls, and eventually
you arrive near the white buildings where you go left through the first
gap (= and hiking pole).
(1h37)
You cross the courtyard, you
again go through a gap (=), but you stay to the right side of the wall
until you can go through the breach in that wall (=).
You now continue to the left of the wall, until you arrive at the angle
of that wall.
You then then descend more or less in the same direction, but past the
valley, you certainly should veer to the RIGHT (cairn and ==).
(1h45) You now wind through the high vegetation and go in the
direction of the chapel you can see in the distance on the island of
Kitrianí. You pass again through the gap in the wall and you continue
in the middle of a lot of greenery.
Soon thereafter, you go again through the gap in the wall, beside the
iron gate, and you arrive at the clear red trail on the grey rocks with
holes - and very soon you are at the water’s edge.
You follow the coastline for 7-8 beautiful minutes and then you bend
away from the sea towards the pass between two hills.
(1h55)
At first the brownish path is easy, but further on it becomes rocky and
stony; after about 10 minutes the real climbing begins. Towards the end,
your path is very steep and stony, but you get a great view of Kitrianí,
first to the right, and then behind you.
(2h21)
After a steep climb of 14 minutes you reach the pass and on the last
ridge you finally discover the beautiful and wide bay of Platýs Gialós.
To the left and above the bay, you see also the monastery of Panagía tou
Vounoú. The
bay of Platýs Gialós. The
descent is sometimes very stony or rocky, but it is pleasant and not too
steep. The path is very clear; towards the end, you climb a little, but
then you get to the final descent and after about 17 minutes you get to
the gate in the fence around the sewage works.
(2h38) You follow the little asphalt road for 8 minutes and come
out at the concrete road where you go right (hiking pole). Then it's 5
minutes until the main road beside a bridge. The bus stop is to the
right. (2h51)
The hotel Platýs Gialós lies to the right, the first bar lies a
little bit further to the left - and the sand and the water are
wonderful...
