Chóra - Angáli - Chóra

Evaluation: this is a pleasant and not too long hike, leading you to the beaches of Fyrá, Angáli and maybe Agios Nikólaos as well. There are a couple of possible variants, in case you would like to, for example, take the most direct way to only the beach of Angáli. This hike deserves an evaluation of **.

Estimated time: The hike via Fyrá to the beach of Angáli takes a little over one hour (AWT). If you want to pay a visit to Agios Nikólaos, this takes another 20 minutes. The most direct route back from Angáli to Chóra will only cost you about 50 minutes – to follow the concrete road going up and to wait for the bus would definitely take as much time...

Route description: You take the street on the right-hand side of the town hall on the first little square of Chóra. After 50 metres, immediately past the bakery, the street goes straight ahead and in turns into a path, which descends between the rocks.

The monopáti just outside Chóra.

You now walk on a beautiful old staircase, going down between terraces; after about 3 minutes the staircase continues to the right, but you go straight ahead on a broad and stony path, leading you further away from Chóra. Another 3 minutes later you do not take the vague trail off the right, but you continue in the direction of the houses in front of you, going up gradually.

After 1 minute there is a path off the left - it also comes from the centre of Chóra -, but you continue straight ahead all the time. A little further down, at the corner of some walls and a telephone pole, you do not go further up towards the houses, but you take a right. After a couple of minutes you arrive at a small, square chapel – behind you there is a marvellous view on Chóra. You continue straight ahead and a little up until you get to a gravel road after a couple of minutes. You follow the gravel road up to the asphalt road. You then take a right and you follow this road for a couple of hundred metres until you reach a pass – on the right you can see the modern chapel-with-balcony of Stavrós; it has now been 20 minutes since you left Chóra.

[If you would like to go to the beach of Angáli directly, you keep following this asphalt road for another 700-800 metres. You walk underneath the three windmills, past the chapel of Agios Dimítrios, till the chapel of Agia Paraskeví on the left-hand side of the road. Immediately before this chapel there is a monopáti off the left. In 15 minutes this path brings you to the concrete road leading to the beach – to actually get to the beach you then have to follow this concrete road for about 500 metres going down (this part is the opposite of the final part of this hike).]

You DO NOT take the path on the opposite side, but you take a left about 20 metres further. At first the monopáti is narrow and sandy while it leads in south/south-western direction. Later on though, it becomes a wonderfully tiled path, which meanders up and down the hills. After about 10 minutes you reach an elevation near a three-forked-junction. When looking behind you have a great view on the three windmills; on the right you can distinguish the coast and the three bays, our aim for today’s hike.

At the three-forked-junction you keep right (there is a yellow arrow). After a couple of minutes the trail describes a wide bend to the right (there is another arrow) and once in a while the path turns into a marvellous kalderími. After 6 minutes you reach the photogenic little church of Christós – this is a truly awesome spot, with already a nice view on the bays.

The marvellous kalderími just before the little church of Christós.

The next stretch of the trail is quite steep; it becomes a rocky trench and thereafter it gets somewhat blocked by green shrubs, and then…it almost disappears. Immediately after a difficult passage between the bushes you should not go right, but you have to take a left over an iron wire. From this point you zigzag down for about 10 minutes, past little sheep paths and in the direction of a log cabin. Just before this cabin you have to step over another wire, but on the left-hand side of the small house you find the beginning of the trail again. In a couple of minutes it meanders to the little beach of Fyrá – usually there is no one here, so you can have a swim very peacefully.

On the other side of the beach you go up a narrow path; this path zigzags between the rocks and after 10 minutes you thus easily reach the beach of Angáli. Over there you find a beautiful sandy beach and also the tavern Angáli. In Summer time this can be a very crowded spot, because the little boats that make the tour of Folégandros stop in Angali – for many tourists who come from Chóra by bus this is the nicest beach of the island.

The beach of Angáli.

[If you would like to continue to the beautiful sandy beach of Agios Nikólaos - where there are also a number of tamarisks to give you shade - , you can walk to the far end of the beach of Angáli. Near some trees or from the concrete landing, you can take a concrete trail going up. This trail turns into a staircase and it runs on the left-hand side of the houses. There after, a fairly steep climb brings you to two very small chapels, where you find the beginning of a beautiful and broad trail. You descend to a very small beach, where you keep to the right in order to find the continuation of the trail. The next climb is steep again and then you walk high above the rocky coast for a little while. You easily arrive at a beautifully situated terrace – we really recommend this place to have something to eat or to drink. You then descend to the actual beach, after a walk of another 20 minutes.]

From the beach of Angáli you walk up along the concrete road for about 500 metres. This road is not too unpleasant since it is bordered with oleanders and with tamarisks giving a lot of shade. Opposite a large cistern there is a gravel road going up the slope on the right. The road curves to the right towards a house; next to this house you find the beginning of a beautiful, old stone staircase; this staircase quickly becomes a stony trail. At the end of this trail you DO NOT continue straight ahead through a hole in the wall. Instead, you go further up to the left. The following climb is strenuous; there after the trail gets flatter and on the right you have a great view on the bay. After about 15 minutes you can already see the main road in front of you and also the church of Panagía beyond. Some minutes later you can climb onto the road via a slope with debris – some 20 minutes after your departure from the beach.

Out of necessity you now have to walk on the asphalt road for some 700-800 metres. You walk underneath the three mills until you get to the Stavrós-chapel again. You continue on the road for another 350 metres, you describe a bend to the left and thereafter (at the traffic sign) you take the gravel road going down on the left.

A couple of minutes later, at a bend to the left, you go straight ahead on the monopáti. At a three-forked-junction before the final climb (some time ago you came from the left at this point) you continue straight ahead. After some 15 minutes you thus arrive high up in the village of Chóra, on the first square on the other side of the town hall.
