Egiali - Langada - Agios Theológos - Stavrós and back

Evaluation: This hike is absolutely a 'must' among the hikes on Amorgós. The trails from Egiáli to Langáda and further from Langáda to Agios Theológos are marvellous already – see also the hike Egiáli - Langáda - Theológos, but this path then continues against the slopes of the Kroúkelos to Stavrós and it really takes you to some extraordinary landscapes. This is definitely a hike worth the maximum evaluation of ****.
[Update by Raymond on April the 13th, 2012, on May the 10th, 2013 and on June the 18th 2021.]

Estimated time: The actual walking time (AWT) of the way out, which is 7,2 km long, takes 2h35, 95 minutes for the trajectory Egiáli-Theológos and 45 minutes for the trajectory Theológos-Stavrós. For the way back, you have to count on 45 minutes back to Agios Theológos and 1h30 for the stretch back to Egiáli.
If you first have to catch the bus from Katápola, you should do that at 9.30am at the latest, so that you can depart from Egiáli at about 11am. Maybe it is even better to take the early boat, the Express Skopelítis, on the days on which it leaves Katápola at 6am and then stops in Egiáli. If there is a late bus to return, or if you can also catch the Skopelítis at about 8pm to go back to Katapola, you have a full day to enjoy all of these wonderful things. The monastery of Agios Theológos is a great spot to picnic, but you can also postpone your picnic until you get to the magnificent surroundings of Stavrós.

Route description: (0h00) You depart near the harbour dam of Egiáli; you follow the water for a short while until you get to the beach and the beautiful promenade bordered with tamarisks. At this point you take the asphalt road going up on the right, in the direction of Langáda and Tholária. After 5 minutes you arrive at a double crossing: you do not take the roads to Tholária and to Langáda off the left, but you go right, in the direction of Chóra. Already after 50 metres you find the old trail to Langáda off the left, indicated by means of a wooden sign. Here is the start of hike number [4].

(0h08) A wonderfully paved path, which turns into a large staircase later on, goes up gradually through a green valley. It is no problem at all to find the right way, there are only a few insignificant side-roads off the trail. After 10 minutes there is a well with a shelter on the left and some 20 minutes later you cross the asphalt road.
The path continues at the opposite side and after 5 minutes, you remain of course on the main path, by going to the right. At the entrance of the village you continue going up on the right and you reach a small parking lot. You can have some rest on a little wall underneath the trees.

(0h36) You just continue walking up, on the left-hand side of the parking lot and further into the village. After about 1 minute you take a left (you follow hike [4]), but after 50 metres already you have to go right.

[Straight ahead there is a concrete road which leaves the village almost immediately. After 50 metres you get to a narrow path in between a lot of flowers; on the left you have a marvellous view on the deep, rocky valley and very far away you can distinguish Tholária. See the hike Egiáli - Langáda - Tholária.]

You walk all the way through the village, going up gradually. At the first bifurcation, you take a right and immediately a left, and at the second bifurcation you go left. You pass the post office and the beautiful church, with a very nice, shaded front yard. In this way you get to the Loza-square, with a pantopolío, a butchery, a restaurant, a grocery store and the nice terrace of I Loza.

(0u42) Departing from this square you go in eastern direction, you go down and you leave the village. Quite soon you get to a beautiful, concrete road, which descends in the direction of the blue dome of Panagía Epanochorianí. After 3 minutes there is a junction: the concrete staircase on the left goes down into the valley with the abandoned village of Stroúmbos (sign and [4]). You continue on the main path (sign Theológos and [5]), you go up and you get in this way a nice view on Stroúmbos.

The abandoned village of Stroúmbos.

Again 2-3 minutes later you pass a trail off the left, while you go up on concrete steps. There is 1 more path on the left, and then you get to another junction: on the left there is a concrete trail heading straight to Panagia Epanochorianí, on the right there is an old stone path with a sign to Agios Theológos (50’ and 3 km) and Stavrós (1h30 and 7 km) [5].

(0h53) You take this old path to the right. At first it is nicely paved and  there are again signs with a [5]. Sometimes, however, the trail goes up via a beautiful brick staircase, while you have great panoramic views on Panagia Epanochorianí and behind you also on Langáda and the island of Nikouriá – and this is such a remarkably quiet and desolate place!

The monopáti between Langáda and Agios Theológos, with behind you the bay of Egiáli and the islet of Nikouriá..

(1h02) After about 8-9 minutes, there is a trail coming from the right; your trail gets narrower and also flatter - you are now at an altitude of 300 metres already. After another 10 minutes, you can have some rest on a stone bench, you go down a while, but then you go up again.

(1h13) You now get to about 290 brick steps - a beautiful climb with some sign-posts and a bench. After a flat stretch with lose stones, you get eventually to a small, green plateau, where you can relax on a large boulder under a lot of shade.
A little further on you reach an open ground, where you keep to the left.

(1h27) The rest of the trail is very pleasant: the slope is gentle, but there are still stones. There are also some parts that have been paved recently, and sometimes there is shade due to vegetation, which is always exceptional on Amorgós!
Another 9 minutes later you get to some more open terrain, next to a small church (Agia  Varvára), with in front of you the big building of Agios Theológos.

The surroundings of Agios Theológos.

You continue more or less flat on a very stony path; you pass through a gate in reinforcing steel and a little further on, you keep of course to the right while staying on the main path (despite a [5] which sends you to the left). Further on, you take this time a left, you arrive on the right of a stable and you reach a side path.

(1h43) On this T-crossing you take the path to the left, which leads to Agios Theológos – on  the right your walk continues to Stavrós [5]. After the visit of the monastery, you will return here.
You thus take a left and after a climb of another 4 minutes you arrive at the monastery. (1h47)

The location of this monastery is marvellous, the building is impressive: there are huge foundations like fortifications and a couple of outhouses. In these outhouses pots and potatoes are waiting for the pilgrims. The church is very beautiful, with nice brick arches, an altar on an old pillar and some fairly well preserved wall paintings. On the outside there is a fantastic view on the massif of Kroúkelos and on the coast. A couple of workers give us refreshing water and some loukoum; we eat in the shade of an outhouse with an oven.

(1h47) After a short pause you descend for a couple of minutes via the same route until you get to the crossing. Straight ahead there is the narrow trail to Stavrós and you continue of course straight ahead.
T
wo minutes later the path bends to the left along a heavy wall [5].
Pay attention: after 5 minutes you find a sign saying "40 minutes Stavrós" and pointing to the RIGHT, and after another four minutes you follow the heavy wall curving to the left. You keep climbing on loose stones - good shoes are really a necessity.

(2h02) After a total of 11 minutes since the T-junction, the trail bends more to the left, turning away from the wall-
you have to continue to the left by walking through an open wired fence ([5] and red dots). You have a truly magnificent view of Theológos, with to the left Donoússa and Náxos in the background. You climb gradually and easily, always higher above the coast in a desolate landscape - yet it is still an absolute surprise when you reach a promontory and suddenly discover the grandeur of the mountains and the depth of the sea deep underneath. The continuation of the path in front of you, clung to the hill side, looks almost scary.

(2h17) However, the path is not dangerous at any time and you are progressing well. There are a few stretches with heavy climbing and you pass a few small capes.

The path to Stavrós.

(2h37) And then you can all of a sudden spot the low chapel of Stavrós in front of you, located in a kind of pass, on the right of the Pramateftís. The chapel itself seems to be dug into the rock and it is usually closed. Only on the 13th and the 14th of September pilgrims come to visit this place; the rest of the year this is a very desolate spot, especially when it is windy.

The area around the chapel of Stavrós, with the Pramatéftis

(2h37) To go back you have to follow exactly the same trails: after 22 minutes there is a fork where you keep to the left (cairn and red mark). You cross a bare slope on the very stony path and you come up against the heavy wall which you follow to the right. You now continue to follow the wall, even when it suddenly turns left [5]. Once arrived at an open space, you continue straight; you arrive between walls and you thus reach the T-junction, near the white stable.

(3h22) You naturally take a left here. Beyond the chapel, after 7 minutes, the path becomes very stony again; after a few minutes, you veer to the right and the path now continues for quite some time, dug in in the ground, between walls.

(3h38) After 2 fairly short paved sections, you veer right [5] and the path that follows is shady and beautiful.

(3h50) After about 250 masonry steps, you continue to the left on the steps, and not on the very rocky path which continues straight. You now get to a very stony and rocky end, then there is a final descent, with a magnificent view.

(4u09) You thus reach the concrete staircase, where you go to the left, and you arrive without problems in the village, on the Loza square, with among others the minimarket O Bebis, the Loza café and the ouzeri O Platounos.

(4h19) You follow the main street straight, you pass below the church of Agia Sofía - it is worth taking the stairs to the right for a moment - and you keep to the left, through a kamára (archway). You leave some side streets to the right and continue straight until you reach a side street with a rounded wall. Here you take a left - a sign shows you the way, but the descent to Egiáli is obvious.
On the asphalt road down at Egiáli you take a right, obviously, and at the next crossing you go to the far left. By going straight you reach the harbour easily. (4h54)
